Gilbert Telfer Scott was born in 1878 and articled to John Hall of Galashiels from 1893, studying at local art classes. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1898 he obtained a place with James Cowie in Motherwell, which enabled him to study at Glasgow School of Art. He moved to Carlisle in 1902 as an assistant in the office of Oliver & Dodgshun and to Hull in the following year as assistant to Gelder & Kitchen, returning to Scotland in 1905 as assistant to James Davidson in Coatbridge. He commenced practice on his own account in Inverkeithing in 1909 and was admitted LRIBA on 19 December 1910, his proposers being Davidson, George Sinclair and Llewellyn Kitchen.
