Eric Alexander Sutherland was born at Whiteburn, West Lothian on 11 June 1870, the son of John Sutherland, bank agent and his wife Mary Wilson, and educated at Glasgow Academy. He was articled to Campbell Douglas & Sellars in 1887 and remained with Campbell Douglas & Morrison after Sellars's death in 1888. During those years he attended classes at Glasgow School of Art, and spent a fortnight sketching and measuring in Elgin and another fortnight at Selby Abbey, Yorkshire, the latter made possible by a travelling scholarship he won in 1892. In 1893 he moved to Manchester as assistant to Mangnall & Littlewoods, and in 1897 to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to work as senior assistant to Matthew Horner Graham, returning to Glasgow in 1899 to commence independent practice. His office was at 96 Renfield Street, but c.1910 he moved to 102 Bath Street where he remained until his death. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, proposed by John Bennie Wilson and the Glasgow Institute of Architects, of which he had recently been made a member; and was advanced to FRIBA on 23 October 1933, his proposers being John Keppie, a friend from his first years with Campbell Douglas & Sellars, James Lochhead and William Brown Whitie.

Sutherland died unmarried on 9 October 1940 at Ellangowan, 37 Douglas Gardens, Uddingston, his home since at least 1910.
