Charles Denny Carus-Wilson
Architect
Year Only
1886
Date Not Known

Charles Denny Carus-Wilson, born 1886, came from Sevenoaks, Kent. He had studied at the Architectural Association Schools from 1904 to 1905 before being articled to John Belcher in 1906-08; he travelled in Norway and Sweden and passed the qualifying exam in 1909, being admitted ARIBA on 29 November of the same year. His proposers were Belcher, William Howard Seth Smith and Hugh Patrick Guarin Maule, all of London.

During the First World War he saw active service and was awarded the Military Cross. Thereafter he worked as senior assistant to Robert Frank Atkinson, who died in 1923, and subsequently formed a brief partnership with W Boyd Scott when they succeeded to Atkinson's practice. In 1924 he was briefly head of the School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield, and it was at this time that he won the competition for the city's war memorial. He resigned his post there to move to Edinburgh as senior lecturer in the College of Art; the reasons for this move are unclear, but he may have been assured of the succession to John Begg. The students are said to have found him 'fierce and awe-inspiring'.

Carus-Wilson retired as a lecturer in 1928 and formed a partnership with Frank Mears, who also taught at Edinburgh College of Art. They practised from 3 Forres Street. Their partnership was dissolved in 1934.
