John Hall was the son of John Hall (1817-1892) who in turn was the brother of Robert Hall, a builder in Galashiels. He 'graduated into architecture from practical building'. His father had acted as builder working on projects by David Bryce, Peddie & Kinnear, Hay & Henderson and John Starforth.

John Hall Junior became an architect sometime before 1884, the firm name being J & J Hall before that year, and was architect to the Education Committee of Roxburgh from 1919, modernising many of the older schools in the county. The firm also continued in general practice, with an output of banks, factories, hospitals, public buildings, baths, theatres and domestic work.

John Hall died on 13 July 1933. The practice was continued by his son John Campbell Hall, who had served his apprenticeship there from 1909 to 1914 or 1915 and had been taken into partnership on his return from war service in 1919. John Campbell Hall was still alive in 1936 and the practice continued into the 1960s when the firm held the post of Selkirk County Architects.
