Alexander Nisbet Malcolm
Architect
Exact Date
Exact Date
11/04/1955
Alexander Nisbet Malcolm was born on 6 October 1877 at Polmont and articled to Clarke & Bell in Glasgow from 1897 to 1902, studying at Glasgow School of Art (1897 to 1901). After completing his apprenticeship he made a three-week sketching tour in Belgium in July 1902 and returned to Clarke & Bell as assistant. He took three-and-half months off to tour the USA and Canada from May to August 1904, becoming principal assistant after his return. He finally left the firm, by then Clarke & Bell & J H Craigie, in April 1908 to commence independent practice at Charing Cross, Grangemouth.

He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, proposed by John Bennie Wilson and the Glasgow Institute of Architects. At that time he was working in partnership with an as yet unidentified Mr Robertson, and before that time he had written a paper on cities in Belgium and papers entitled 'Housing of the Working Classes' and 'Torphichen Priory'.

The partnership with Robertson was presumably dissolved prior to 1913, by which time Malcolm had moved his office to Vicar Chambers, Falkirk. He served in the Royal Engineers during the First World War. At the end of it he reopened his practice in Falkirk, and it is probably at this time that he entered into partnership with Thomas Mair Copland. The partnership was dissolved in 1921 when Malcolm was appointed architect to Stirlingshire Education Authority. From that appointment he gained that of Stirlingshire County Architect in 1932. He retired in 1943 but became a Vice-President of the RIAS and President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects in 1945-46. He was a member of the Edinburgh Architectural Association from 1907. He died on 11 April 1955.
