Basic Biographic Details

John Murdoch & Lockhart
Architectural practice
Year Only
1904
Date Not Known
05/08/1926
Little is known of John Murdoch except that he was born c.1826 and trained as a civil engineer and that he was in practice at 48 Newmarket, Ayr in 1868, moving to no 62 in the early 1880s and finally to 62 Sandgate in the mid-1880s. His early work is dry post-late Georgian. By the late 1870s he was proficient in both Bryce-school Scots baronial and a Queen Anne inspired free Renaissance, probably as a result of having acquired a very competent draughtsman from a more up-to-date practice. In 1904 he was joined in partnership by John Whitelaw Lockhart. Lockhart was born in 1877 and articled to Morris & Hunter 1894-99. In the latter year he obtained a place in the office of James Salmon & Son as an improver which enabled him to attend the courses at Glasgow School of Art and the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College under Charles Gourlay.

Murdoch died in 1906 or 1907. Lockhart continued the practice under the existing title of John Murdoch & Lockhart, but like so many others he appears to have suffered from the effects of the Finance Act of 1909 as he had given up his office and was practising from home by 1914. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, proposed by John Bennie Wilson and the Glasgow Institute of Architects. He died in 1924.
