Edmund Sharpe was born at Heathfield, Knutsford, Cheshire on 31 October 1809. He was educated at Sedbergh School and St John's College, Cambridge, where he obtained an MA in 1836 having undertaken some travel in Europe during the previous two years. He was articled to Thomas Rickman in 1836. He commenced practice in Lancaster soon thereafter and entered into partnership with his former pupil Edward Graham Paley in 1845. He was Mayor of Lancaster in 1848. He retired in 1851 and died on 8 May 1877.
