Exact Date

John Galt was born at 24 Langlands Road, Govan on 28 October 1878, the son of John Galt, master builder and his wife Elizabeth Kyle. He was articled to H & D Barclay in 1896, attending Glasgow School of Art and the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. He remained with the same firm after completing his apprenticeship, and was admitted LRIBA in 1910, his proposers being David Barclay, Robert William Horn and James Campbell Reid. In his proposer's statement, Barclay describes Galt as 'one of my leading assistants' and 'a draughtsman & architect of much ability'.

Galt is chiefly remembered as the executant architect for the North British Diesel Engine Works, the actual design being by Karl Bernardt who had worked with Peter Behrens on the AEG Factory in Berlin in 1908-09.

Galt worked in partnership with George Simpson Barr in Glasgow from 1924 until at least 1934 or 1935. He married Margaret McDonald Bryan Campbell and they had a daugher, also named Margaret.

John Galt died on 22 November 1964 at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride.
