Charles Turnbull Ewing was born on 12 February 1880, the son of Crieff architect George Turnbull Ewing. He was educated at Morrison's Academy in Crieff, and attended Glasgow University from 1896 to 1898, and Glasgow Technical College and School of Art from 1899 to 1905. He was articled to John James Burnet from 1899 to 1903, remaining as a draughtsman until 1905, whereupon he returned to Crieff to work as a draughtsman to his father. From 1906 to 1909 he worked as a draughtsman to Sir Aston Webb in London, then returned once more to his father's office as principal assistant, before commencing independent practice in 1910 in Crieff, seemingly in partnership with his father. He was admitted LRIBA on 4 July 1910, his proposers being Aston Webb, John James Burnet and Leonard Stokes.

Ewing served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War. He married in 1918 and had one son. Nothing is yet known of his professional life beyond the time of his admittance as LRIBA, but he was still a member of both the RIAS and the RIBA in 1938. His main recreational interest was curling.

He remained a member of the RIBA until at least 1940. He died in January 1953.
