Robert Jonas Gildard was born in Ayr in 1868, the son of James Gildard (b.1829) in Bonhill and who was a hotel keeper in Ayr and Argyll, and his wife Helen MacFarlane, who had married in Anderston, Glasgow on 28th April 1864.

James's brother was the architect Thomas Gildard (1822-95).

Robert was closely associated with Tait Conner and Henry Mitchell, went out to South Africa and worked there with Conner and Sir Herbert Baker; he had previously worked in the Edinburgh City Architect's Office under Robert Morham on the Fire Station. He also exhibited a sketch design for a public hall at the RSA in 1900.

He appears to have been working under Ebenezer James MacRae from at least 1920 into the early 1930s and his initials appear on drawings for the block of shops at Saughton Golf Course.

Died suddenly at 8 Gillsland Road on 3 June 1944 aged 76.  'Architect, late of City Architects Department, Edinburgh'.  He left an estate of £7125.
