Bio Notes :
Captain Sir Samuel Brown was born in London of Scottish parents in 1774 or 1776. He served in the Royal Navy from 1795 until 1812, retiring with the rank of Captain. He then commenced a second career as a structural engineer, taking out patents for suspension bridges in 1816 and 1817. In his retirement he was based at Netherbyres, Ayton, where he rebuilt the house to designs by George Angus. He died in 1852.
