John Francis Bentley was born in Doncaster on 30 January 1839, the son of Charles Bentley, a lawyer turned wine merchant and his wife Ann Bacchus. He was educated at a private school in Doncaster and, his intention of becoming an artist being discouraged, he was sent to the locomotive engineering works of Messrs Sharrpe Stewart & Company of Manchester in 1855 before becoming articled to Messrs Winsland and Holland, contractors in London. He worked for Henry Clutton (1819-1893) as an Improver until 1860. In 1861, Bentley converted to Roman Catholicism, and he commenced independent practice in 1862, quickly becoming an accomplished mid-Decorated and late Gothic designer specialising in Gothic churches, schools and ecclesiastical furnishing. In 1894 Cardinal Vaughan entrusted him with the design of Westminster, designed in a Byzantine-Early Christian manner at the Cardinal's request. He was nominated for the Royal Gold Medal but died on 2 March 1902 at The Sweep, Old Town, Clapham Common, London before the nomination was confirmed.
