Bio Notes :
George Dale Oliver was born in 1851, the son of Thomas Oliver of Newcastle upon Tyne, and was articled to his father in 1867. In 1871 he moved to London to gain wider experience as an improver and latterly assistant in the office of George Edmund Street. He was subsequently assistant to J Crosby Hetherington in Carlisle, who took him into partnership in 1876.
In 1898 Oliver entered into partnership with Edward John Dodgshun. Dodgshun had been born in 1854 and had been articled to Thomas Ambler of Leeds in 1870. He had subsequently spent a year in the office of George Edmund Street in London and some time in that of William Burges before returning to Leeds to commence practice on his own account in 1875. Soon thereafter he had entered into partnership with William Frederick Unsworth.
Oliver & Dodgshun had offices in Carlisle and Leeds with Oliver in Carlisle and Dodgshun in Leeds. Oliver was County Architects for Cumbria until 1919 and all official commissions were by him alone. Dodgshun was the President of the Leeds and Yorkshire Architectural Society for two years. He died in 1927. His son Leslie Sydney Dodgshun, born in 1875, followed him into the profession. Oliver died in 1928.
