EXTENSION T0 ZETLAND SCHOOL. Mr Shears reported that he had called upon Mr Black and Mr Page, respecting the extension to Zetland School, and he submitted reports and plans from both gentlemen. Mr Page bad stated that he did not expect any fee for preparing the report and plan, but would stand entirely upon his proposition. Mr Black stated that it he was unsuccessful candidate be would expect a fee. The Clerk read the reports from the architects. Mr Black said whatever extension is made on the school, the present building ought not to be interfered with. He proposes to build an addition the school immediately in front of the present ground; this, although covering new ground, holds does not interfere with the playground proper. The extension proposed is two storeys in height, and consists of four rooms, each giving accommodation for 84 pupils, or a total of 836. In building this extension the present headmaster’s room requires to taken down, that another must be provided. This is shown on the plan at the loss of space for 37 pupils, so that the extension the school will give increased accommodation for 300. Including extension of offices, the cost of additions Mr Black estimates at £1500. Mr G. Deas Page would provide additional accommodation by taking down the centre original building, and building addition the front, large class-room, 37 feet wide, would be provided, having the benches and desks arranged along one walk The classes, Mr Page says, could be taught six deep, and there would room to draw out the children from their desks. This extension would give accommodation for 200 scholars, and built at the level of the present building was estimated coat £14OO. Built a lower level, it would cost £1380. To add the ground floor only, and not to leave room for the stairs, would provide accommodation for 40 additional scholars, or 240 in all. To carry up the walls of the proposed front portion would give accommodation for scholars, and to carry the walls of both old and proposed new part would accommodate something like 1100 scholars altogether. Mr Hendrie, speaking on the reports, said that according Mr Page, the extension could be made to accomodate something like 1100 scholars, and that done for or £2000 it would save building a new school. The matter left over until next meeting.

[Note] Replaced by a school of the same name in the 20th century.
