"DENNY—OPENING OF A NEW PUBLIC HALL
As intimated in these columns some weeks ago, our enterprising townsman, Mr David Anderson, merchant, has conceived the idea of converting the upper flat of his large store beside the railway station into public hall. Proceedings were not long in being commenced to carry to a successful issue Mr Anderson's proposition. That the public hall accommodation in Denny was inadequate for the rising importance of the town and district was for long apparent to the greatest novice in public necessities. The new hall is 52 feet in length, the breadth is 32, and it is seated to accommodate 600, while in an extreme pressure 700 could be received. The stage or platform is erected at the north end of the hall, and is a handsomely got up construction, the design being pleasant in detail. Technically, it is "cove" shaped, and arched with moulding. The cornicing round the hall is none the less artistic than that of the platform, which, it ought to be mentioned, is 15 feet in length and 12 in breadth. The architect was tied down to a height of 16 feet, and he has done well under the circumstances. Beneath, the extreme height of the hall, is crossed with iron tie rods, and on the ceiling there are two very exquisitely finished centres composed of flowers, while the acoustic arrangements of the hall are complete and satisfactory. Great care has been taken in regard to ventilation, and although the hall was fairly taxed on the opening night, the atmosphere never was unpleasant. The usual adjuncts of a public hall have not been overlooked. The ante room accommodation is spacious enough, with the exception of the entrance hall, which is just little confined. Mr G. Deas Page, of Falkirk, was the architect."
