NOTES: The petition is signed by John Lorimer for George Paterson on 14 August and by Paterson himself on 17 August. He states that he has been in a distant place of the country and forgot to make an application to build. In a note on the front of the petition; ‘Edinb. 26 August 1780. Recd. Up the two plans which were shown the Dean of Guild but not meant to be lodged herewith, John Lorimer’. REFERENCES: There is a contract in the Wemyss family archives, Gosford house, between George Paterson, architect and Francis Charteris of Amisfield, dated 18 March 1784 in which it is noted that the two houses built by Paterson on the west side of St John Street were complete by Whitsunday 1780, but did not sell. The original agreement was that they would share the building and finishing costs and split any profit after sale. The lower house [towards the Cowgate] was occupied at that date by Sir William Maxwell of Sprinkell. It was agreed between them that Charteris would have the upper house and Paterson the lower. DRAWINGS: Mentioned but not here.
The Paterson family coninued to occupy part of these premises until at least 1784. | Building Type ClassificationThe building is classified under the following categories: | | Classification | Original classification? | Notes | | House | | |
