MR. JONES' NEW SHOPS. The new shops just completed on the Racecourse road, to the order of Mr. W. H~Jones; is a credit to the district, a The two shops are erected on land having a frontage of 33ft., by a depth of.701., and are built in the most" substantial and workmanlike manner, reflecting great praise on the contractors,, Messrs Tate and Davis, who have evidently done their utmost to give satisfaction. They are two stories high, and the design is 'exceedingly neat and attractive. The corner shop, occupied by Mrs. l. P..p Messent, draper, is'16ft. Gin. wide,'and 35ft. deep while the other,:which has been taken up by Mrs. Syers for a fancy repository etc., is 14it. wide by 35ft. deep. Each shop has six good rooms, bath, pantry, and scullery, and in fact everything, that forethought could devise has been done to make them convenient and comfortable. The front has been treated in a classic style, the pilasters and corners being cemented, while the space between is colored red and neatly tuck pointed, the contrast being very pleasing and effective. Mrs Messent's window has 28ft. of plate glass and is 12ft. high and the other window is 12ft by 8ft. The cost of the buildings was £1600, and from their fine appearance, one would imagine they cost much more. Mr. A. E. Duguid who was the architect and is entitled to every commendation fort he excellence of his design and for the satisfactory manner in which the whole work has been completed.
