Extract from the diary of Sir John Watson, December 5 1893 (part of speech at inauguration):
'I offered them a fountain which they accepted. Steps were taken to have plans drawn up by a young friend of my own, who did a similar one in Hamilton, Mr Paterson. That was the first part. It next arose where it was to be placed. I came out one day and was accompanied throughout the town by ex-Bailie Stuart, Mr J D Marshall, ex-Provost Cameron, and my good cousin Mr Watson, to select a site. I first came to this spot, where in former years I spent so many of my youthful days...I think the architect deserves credit for the design and all the tradesmen, I hope, have carried out the work thoroughly well...'
