It has a present capacity of 1,000 bushels, the building being faced with local conglomerate stone, and lit by electricity. The heating is by a Babcock and Willcox tubular boiler. The frontage of the two stills and also the boiler is built of white enamelled fire-bricks. There is a large warehouse of over 200 feet by 60 feet In connection with the distillery, and in keeping with its scale, there have been erected houses for the Excise officers and workmen. Founded by the Knockando-Glenlivet Distillery Company (John Tytler Thomson) in 1898, Knockando was considered one of the most advanced distilleries of its day. However, within months of opening, the distillery was closed in March 1900 and it remained out of production until purchased by the London gin manufactures, W & A Gilbey Ltd for £3,500 in 1904.
