Notes: Approval had been given by the Bridgend Urban District Council to a scheme for redevelopment of the centre of Bridgend by Cophall Holdings Limited. The scheme has now been submitted to Glamorgan County Council and will soon will go the the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. To a scheme by Alister MacDonald and Partners, the plans provide for redevelopment of about 11 acres at a cost estimated at about £1,500,000, with a first phase on an area of 5.5 acres near the Ogmore River. This provides for a traffic-free pedestrian shopping precinct, mainly above the level of surrounding streets because of the configuration of the land. Car parking will be beneath. There will also be a number of offices and a new market building to replace the existing market. This will be a hexagonal ramped building with individual stalls close to the river, and with a riverside walk partly beneath the building. Further along the bank will be a restaurant. It is hoped that work will be able to start on the scheme in about 12 months’ time. [The Times 14 November 1962 page 6]

This first phase of the scheme on a site bounded by Caroline Street, Nolton Street and Queen Street was finally completed in 1972, the new Market opening on Monday 15 May of that year. The development is not included in Buildings of Wales: Glamorgan.
