With the laying of the foundation-stone* on Saturday, the harbour improvements at Pennan, which lies midway between Fraserburgh and Macduff, have been practically completed. The harbour is a part of the foreshore originally inclosed by two piers—the east and west. About forty years ago, the west pier, which was built of sandstone masonry, was demolished by a heavy storm, and the wreckage not only blocked up the harbour to a considerable extent, but the absence of a breakwater left the remaining part of the basin unsheltered from north-easterly gales. The scheme of works which has been carried out by Mr. James Barron, C.E., Aberdeen, comprised a new west pier, some 336 feet long. The cost has been about £1,800. [Building News 26 August 1904 p309]
* The stone is inscribed 'This stone was laid by Miss Elizabeth Maconachie, Strichen House, 20th August, 1904. The Rev Charles Birnie, Chairman, Harbour Committee. James Barron, Engineer'.
In 1981 the West Pier was repaired at cost of £17,000.
