After a number of delays, the David Elder Infirmary was built between 1925 and 1927 as part of a bequest by the shipowner Alexander Elder(1834-1915) of Southport, one of the founders of the Elder Dempster Line and the British and African Steam Navigation Company. Managed by the Board of Glasgow Western Infirmary, the hospital provided accident and emergency treatment for workers in the nearby shipyards until its closure in the 1980s.
