Basic Site Details Name: | The Pavilion | City or county: | Glasgow | Country: | Scotland | Parish: | | Status: | A listed | Grid ref: | | Notes: | The Glasgow Pavilion Palace of Varieties (opened on Monday) has a central situation in the neighbourhood of Sauchiehall Street at its junctions with Renfield and Renfrew Streets. It has been erected to the designs of Mr Bertie Crewe of Savoy Mansions, Savoy Street, London WC and has seating accommodation for 2,500 persons. Its main elevation is in salmon pink terra cotta treated in a highly ornate manner in the style of the later French Renaissance. In this elevation is the grand entrance hall. The gallery has been designed to offer a clear view of the stage from every part. The general scheme of decoration is in cream and gold and a special feature is the proscenium arch which is filled in with Wattean paintings. The ceiling is domed and has a sliding roof. The stage has a width of 70 feet. The auditorium, which is 76 feet in width is, owing to the newest suspensory principles of support, without a single column in the whole extent. It should be said that ample precautions have been taken to secure against fire or panic. The building throughout is built of fireproof materials and no fewer than eleven exits will be in regular use - two from the stalls and three for each of the other portions of the building. In the event of a fire occurring on the stage, an asbestos curtain will immediately descend and prevent the spread of the fire to the auditorium. In addition, the management have provided a large patent sprinkler and two powerful hydrants, and the stage is in direct contact with the fire brigade. ..... continues with list of contractors.
