Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Clark | Designation: | | Born: | 1831 | Died: | 1911 | Bio Notes: | George Clark was born in Pathhead on 1st December 1831 to Adam Clark, a Wright, and his wife Alison Borrowman.
He was apprenticed to his father before moving to Edinburgh where he worked as a carpenter for a Brewery on the South Bank of the Canongate. In the late 1860s he moved to Morningside to work with his uncle William Langlands, a Wright and building contractor in Tipperlinn. On his death in 1873 he inherited his business.
Like his forbears Clark was involved in housebuilding in the rapidly growing suburb of Morningside. He was also responsible for the joinery of several churches in the area, including St Matthews Parish Church where he was a Manager and also on the Building Committee.
As well as building carpentry, he was also able to produce furniture of high quality. His many children all received a corner cabinet on their marriages. A couple of stanzas of a poem written about him notes his skill in a variety of works.
Clark was a joiner to his trade And varied were the things he made, Nae matter whether rough or fine. In Rosewood, Oak or common Pine.

George died at 4 Churchill Place, residence of his son in law James Weir, on 20 January 1911 in his 81st year.
George’s son William Langlands Clark (b1874) took over the business when George retired. He later sold the firm in Morningside and worked for a larger concern. In this role he was responsible for the timber doors on the Scottish War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle.
