He was an assistant in the office of Campbell Jones & Partners from May 1954 to September 1955 and job architect with Minoprio & Spencely from September 1955 to January 1957. He would seem to have worked with Basil Spence as job architect from 1957-59 and then from 1960-61 as group architect in charge of a complex of Pure and Applied Science buildings at the University of Nottingham. He subsequently formed his own firm and from 1961 became one of the two associates of Andrew Renton (Andrew Renton & Associates). In 1966 Humphrey Wood joined the partnership, the name becoming Renton Howard Wood Associates.
