Bio Notes: William Shield was born about 1845 and was the civil engeer of the admiralty. In the later 1870s and early 1880s he had spent time in South Africa where three of his children were born. In the late 1890s he was resident engineer for the Harbour of Refuge in Peterhead. In 1897 he represented the firm Coode Sons, & Matthews on a trip to Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
