Basic Biographical Details

Name: Alexander Forteath (or Williamson)
Designation:
Born: 1787(?)
Died: 1866(?)
Bio Notes: Alexander Williamson (later Alexander Forteath, perhaps on his inheriting the estate of Newton)) was factor to the Earls Fife in the first quarter of the 19th century. In 1807 an advertisement appeared in the Inverness Courier for letting the House of Leuchars, Morayshire, for the Earl of fife by Williamson, factor to the Earl.

Williamson or Forteath was involved in a court case with James, Earl of Fife in 1819. The case ran on to at least 1821. The jury found for the Trustees of the Earl (who was dead by then) and were awarded £20,000 damages. The case seems to have centred around papers which Forteath asked the Earl to sign, but the papers were not what he claimed they were. There seems to have been other instances of forgery.
