Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Sands | Designation: | | Born: | 1780s or 1790s | Died: | | Bio Notes: | James Sands was probably born in the 1780s or 1790s as he was a pupil of Lewis Wyatt and was still in the office when he exhibited designs for Torrie House, Torryburn, Fife at the Royal Academy in 1813 and 1816. He entered the competition for St David’s Ramshorn in Glasgow but was not successful.
Sands was more successful in Ireland. In 1824 in conjunction with Thomas Alfred Cobden of Carlow Sands built Russelltown House, County Carlow for William Duckett. Thereafter he seems to have been styled James Sands of London and Carlow. He was involved with the completion of the tower of Down Cathedral in 1829. Two years later he seems to have designed Gartree Church, County Antrim which is in a similar Gothic style to the work at Down. He also drew up a plan for Hillsborough house for the 3rd Marquess of Downshire in 1844 and made alterations to Grey Abbey House, County Down for Hugh Montgomery about 1846.
