Bio Notes: James Smith was born in Banffshire in about 1776. He moved to Inverness before 1800 and worked there for fifty years as an architect, builder and contractor. He served as a magistrate of Inverness and was 'extensively known and justly respected'. He was the contractor for many public buildings and work extensively in the north of Scotland. He worked presumably as contractor or builder on the lighthouses of Tarbetness, Lismore and Covesea Skerries.

His wife was Sophia (born 1801) and he had one daughter and three sons.

In 1804 he was appointed one of the two surveyors of the Highland churches built under the direction of Thomas Telford. He was a subscriber to the Inverness Lunatic Asylum in 1845.

He died in December 1845.
