He was employed in all three capacities in the expansion of Dundee in the early 19th century. He was well-known locally and his pseudonym was ‘The Baron’. He designed various buildings in the Lochee area.
He died on 19 September 1849 aged 77. An elaborate monument was erected to his memory in Mains Churchyard.
