At first it was only intended to enlarge the existing house to the designs of James Smith's cousin James Smith of Jordanhill but 'after the erection had gone some length, it was found more suitable to pull down the old house entirely, and the present building was completed according to plans furnished by Mr Alexander Ramsay, architect and builder, Edinburgh, preserving as much as possible the internal arrangements as designed by Mr Smith'
