Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert Mitchell
Designation:
Born:
Died:
Bio Notes: Robert Mitchell is said to have been born in Aberdeen but he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1782 and must therefore have been practising there from this date. In 1801 he published 'Plans, etc. of Buildings erected in England and Scotland; with An Essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman, and Gothic Architecture'. He presumably also wrote a book described in a bookseller's catalogue as 'Mitchell's Designs for Rural Villas on Economical Principles' (1785). No copy of this is known.

Mitchell designed in the style of James Wyatt. His larger houses combine neoclassical detail with Palladian porticos and attached office blocks which were popular in the earlier Georgian period. His book includes a design of a country house in the form of a Greek Doric temple which anticipates Grange Park by William Wilkins. He designed only one building in Scotland as far as is yet known.

There is a miniature portrait of Mitchell by W H Lethbridge in the Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal. His son was probably George Mitchell, also an architect, who abandoned the profession to become a planter in Tobago.
