Basic Biographical Details

Name: Gideon Gray
Designation:
Born:
Died: 1791
Bio Notes: Gideon Gray practised as a mason and architect in Stirling for most of his life. He worked early in his career on the Touch estate. He married the daughter of a tenant farmer on the estate and was later employed as factor.

He was granted the freedom of Stirling in 1770 because, having advised the Burgh Council on the condition of the bridge, he refused to take any payment.

In about 1786 the estate of Touch was sequestrated. Touch was the property of Hugh Seton. The estate along with the office of heritable armour bearer to His Majesty (which was linked to the estate) was offered for sale by public roup. Gideon Gray was involved with the sale acting as agent and showing interested parties around. The estate did not sell. Hugh Seton was imprisoned in Dover Castle and left the country on his release. In 1791 Gray was acting as agent in the sale of timber from the Glens of Redhall, part of the Touch property.

Besides his factorial duties at Touch, Gray continued to undertake work for the town of Stirling until his death at Touch in 1791. He is commemorated by a stone in the New Churchyard of St Ninian's, Stirling. His wife died at Touch House in 1800 aged 73.
