Basic Biographical Details

Name: James Begg
Designation:
Born:
Died: 1805
Bio Notes: James Begg was James Craig's draughtsman in the mid-1780s. He then worked as a builder, active in the last decade of the 18th century. He probably also designed some of the buildings he erected. In 1795 he acted as an agent in the sale of a house on the east side of Gayfield Place.

He was appointed to act as an inspector for the rebuilding of a tenement in West Bow for the Dean of Guild. He also acted as inspector for a building on the east side of South Bridge on the corner with the High Street because of the 'insuffiency of the building and the encroachment of the footpath'. The Court appointed tradesmen to inspect the building: 'John Wilson, Alexander Stevenson and James Begg, masons and John Baxter, architect or any two of them'.

He died about 1805. An advertisement appeared in the Caledonian Mercury on 7 March 1863 which requested the address of any heir of James Begg builder who had died about 1805.
