Basic Biographical Details Name: | Sir Anthony Alexander | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | 1637 | Bio Notes: | Sir Anthony Alexander was the second son of William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling. He studied at the University of Glasgow and in July 1626 had license to travel abroad making the Grand Tour for three years. On his return he was appointed Master of Works to the King in Scotland along with James Murray. Anthony Alexander owed the appointment to the influence of his father who was Secretary of State for Scotland. The warrant indicates that he had gained proficiency in architecture. The office was confirmed in 1634 after the death of James Murray but Alexander died three years later in London on 17 September 1637. He had been knighted in 1635.
He may have been associated with Argyll's Lodging but Colvin states that this lacks proper authority. |
