Basic Biographical Details

Name: Joseph Fitzgerald
Designation: Architect
Bio Notes: Joseph (always known as 'Joe') FitzGerald was born in ___, the son of Joe Fitzgerald, house painter and his wife Sarah. He was educated at Lawside Academy Dundee and studied at the Duncan of Jordonstone School of Architecture from 1951 to 1957. Initially he wanted to take up aeronautical engineering but his enthusiastic mother thought she would get him a special book about the subject and bought Bannister Fletchers book on architecture by mistake and the rest, as they say, is history although Joe states that this may have saved the blushes of the aircraft industry. He was awarded a Rowand Anderson Studentship for the best student design in Scotland in 1957 presented by the RIAS.

He initially worked in 1958 in the great Glasgow design office of Gillespie Kidd and Coia and which he says is still the best learning experience of his working life. A decision to work for what was initially to be a short time in Northern Ireland in 1959 ended up in a lifetime there, he having met and married a Belfast girl, Margaret. They have three children with a son John an architect in Belfast.

Joe and another Dundee architect Jim Kennedy who also settled in Belfast had the good fortune to join and be part of the three man design team for the new Belfast Aldergrove airport in 1960 -1965, with Billy McAlister. The Airport received an RIBA Award in 1966.

He had joined the office of Shanks and Leighton in 1965 and later he and Jim in 1997 took over this practice and which still retained the name Kennedy FitzGerald and Associates after Joe retired from that practice in 1995.

He started a personal consultancy practice in Belfast in 1995 where he enjoyed a visiting tutor and examiners role in the Queens School of Architecture and was delighted to receive an Honorary Professorship in 1999. During this period he also served as an External Examiner for the Masters course in the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow and an assessor for two international architectural competition organised by the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland. He was particularly pleased to be part of the practice of Kennedy FitzGerald and Associates who received from the RIAI, the Gold Medal for Architecture for the period 1983-1985.

He retired from full time practice in 2010.
