Bio Notes: James Bowman Dey was born in South Africa on 30 August 1884. He was articled to Carter & McIntosh of Pretoria and Johannesburg from January 1897. hH remained in the office after completing his articles until September 1906 when he left for Scotland. There he continued his studies, enrolling at the School of Architecture in Aberdeen in October 1906. After a year he worked in the office of H Baillie Scott in Bedford. He returned to South Africa in early 1908, sailing on the Kenilworth Castle from Southampton on 13 March 1908. He is described in the passenger list as 'draughtsman'.

He obtained a post in the Public Works Department in Pretoria June 1908 as a draughtsman. He was promoted twice, working for a spell in Cape Town and in 1925 rose to the post of architectural asistant and finally assistant architect in 1929. That same year he was elected ARIBA. From about 1936 he was transferred to the newly established Transvaal Provincial Authoriity as chief architect. He retired in 1941.
