John Adams was probably born in Ardrossan in 1881, the son of John Adams, burgh collector and house factor and his wife Elizabeth. He probably trained as an architect in Glasgow. He emigrated to South Africa in 1900 and practised in Johannesburg. He designed a number of houses in Kensington & Yeoville.
During the First World War he joined the 1st South African Infantry and campaigned in German South West Africa before going overseas with the Infantry Brigade. By 1916 he was Sergeant-Major in the South African Overseas Corps. In 1918 he was reported missing and then dead, having died of wounds while a prisoner-of-war in Germany.
