Bio Notes: George Gray was born on 9 October 1936. He was educated at Ayr Grammar School and Ayr Academy and studied architecture at Glasgow School of Art from 1954 to 1961. During this period he worked in the office of Stevenson & Ferguson in Ayr and in the architects department of Ayr County Council, returning for the period 1961-62 to Stevenson & Ferguson. He was elected ARIBA and ARIAS in 1962. He spent a year working for Kirkcudbright County Council after qualification, 1961-62. He was elected ARIAS in the latter year. In 1963 obtained a post in the Scottish Office and the same year began the part-time course in town planning. He was awarded his diploma in 1966.

Gray remained with the Scottish Office for the remainder of his career working mainly on housing, prisons and building control matters. He was appointed Deputy Chief Architect and Director of Building in 1990. He retired in 1996.
