Bio Notes: Alexander Burns was born on 8 December 1937. He was articled to Gibson & Taylor in Belfast from 1954 and studied part-time at Belfast College of Art until May 1958 after which he sat the RIBA Intermediate exams. He took the 4th year diploma course in architecture at Edinburgh College of Art and was elected ARIBA in 1960, proposed by E R Taylor, J H Shann and John Nicol.

From 1960-62 he was an assistant in the practice of Mountford, Piggott & Partners in London but moved back to Northern Ireland in 1962 to a post as assistant with the County Antrim Planning Department. From 1962-64 he had an assistant post with G R Smith in Main Street, Lorne and in 1964 moved to Houston & Beaumont in Belfast where by 1969 he was a senior assistant. He was elected FRIBA that year, proposed by Trevor Anthony Houston, Eric Waite Beaumont and Robert H Gibson.
