Bio Notes: William Stewart Donald was born on 17 January 1938 in Ernakulam, India, the son of George Donald, engineer with The Burmah Shell Oil Company , and his wife Margaret MacDonald Tait. He studied at the School of Architecture in Aberdeen from 1956 -1962 and was awarded the RIAS Lorimer Memorial Prize in1960. He was elected ARIBA and made ARIAS in 1965.

In 1962 he moved to Falkirk where he began his professional career with the Burgh Architect's Department from 1962-1964. He then worked for The British Aluminium Company Scottish Engineer's Office in Edinburgh from 1964 -1966, before moving to the practice of Wilson & Wilson in Falkirk in 1966. In 1968 he joined Alison, Hutchison and Partners, Edinburgh, initially as a Senior Architect, then as an Associate Partner, before becoming a Partner in 1971, when he ran the Glasgow office at 2 Fitzroy Place. He remained with them till 1977.

On the the death of the senior partner, Robert Hutchison and following changes in the practice he moved abroad to start a new phase of his career. He held several senior positions in Libya, Kuwait. Iraq and Saudi Arabia. From 1989 -2003 he worked on the Al Yamamah Project in Saudi Arabia for British Aerospace, first as Design Manager for Scott, Wilson & Kirkpatrick, Consultants to British Aerospace on classified facilites construction, then latterly as Senior Project Engineer in the British Aerospace Defence Infrastructure Team. He retired from practice in 2003.

Donald and his family have maintained their home in Falkirk since 1962 and he and his wife now live in retirement there.
