By the 1860s he was a master joiner with a business which employed 6 men and 4 boys. At some point Alexander Dale (c1810-14 May 1862) was also in the business. By 1871 Andrew's two sons, Gabriel (born 1852) and James (born 1855) were also in the business. He was still employing 6 men at that date and 2 boys. Alexander Andrew undertook some architectural work as he was responsible for the alterations and additions to the West High Kirk in 1859-60. Gabriel followed this lead and after being articled to William Railton worked as an architect on his own account. Alexander Andrew's nephew, Robert Anderson was also in the business.
At the time of his death on 8 December 1899 aged 86, it is recorded that he had been married twice, first to Agnes Douglas and second to Agnes Anderson or Kerr.
