Bio Notes: William Alexander who worked on various churches in Ayrshire may be identified with the person of that name who was born in about 1808, the son of Ivie Alexander, farmer, and his wife Mary Nicol. He was a builder ran a business by 1851 employing 14 men and by 1861 employing 25 men. At least two of his sons were also in the business. He should not be confused with William Alexander of Southbar who succeeded to the estate of Ballochmyle in 1845 and who died in 1853. He was an amateur architect and may have been repsonsible for the design of Stair Kirk and other buildings.

William Alexander of Ayr remained in business as a builder at least until the 1870s.

He died on 31 June 1880 aged 82. His wife, Janet McMurtie, had predeceased him. His son William registered his death.
