Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Scott | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1831 | Died: | 27 September 1884 | Bio Notes: | William Scott was born in Arbroath about 1831, the son of Alexander Scott, mason. He presumably trained with his father and practised as a builder initially and later architect in Arbroath. As early as 1851 he was employing 12 men, perhaps taking over his father's business. By 1861 he employed 23 men and 3 boys. He was Inspector of Harbour Works and architect to the School Board. He reported on the town's waterworks and probably acted as burgh engineer although he may not have officially held that title. As well as designing the Guildhall in Arbroath he was responsible for a number of schools, churches, mills and factories.
Scott was one of the original members of the Arbroath Volunteers Rifles Corps, reaching the rank of Sergeant and he was a 'capital shot'.
He died after a short illness on 27 September 1884. His wife was Betsy and they had three sons and three daughters. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Arbroath, Angus, Scotland | Private/business | | | | | John Street, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland | Private/business | 1860s | 1870s | |
