Bio Notes: Walter Duns was the title of a Duns practice of which John David Louis Mylne (generally known as David) was principal.

Mylne was born on 13 June 1925, the son of Kenneth Mylne, a prep school headmaster and his wife Dorothy Parry Oakden. He was educated at Craigflower and Glenalmond. He spent the war years in the RAF, serving in South Africa and France. He then studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art, working part-time in the Edinburgh office of Sir Basil Spence. He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1950. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and was elected ARIBA in 1953.

After qualifying he was for a time in British Aluminium’s architectural department prior to commencing independent practice as Walter Duns in Duns in 1959, later opening a branch office in Berwick on Tweed; but by the late 1970s his home was in Edinburgh, his practice being continued from a combined office and bedsit at Hutton, Berwickshire.

Mylne was essentially a conservation architect, serving as adviser to the Berwickshire Civic Society and as a committee member and consultant to Berwick on Tweed Civic Trust. His work in Berwick brought Civic Trust awards. Amongst his other work, he was responsible for conservation work at two housing schemes, Main Street, Tweedmouth, and Ravensknowe, Berwick which involved matching original buildings and renovating old buildings. By 1987 he was practising as David Mylne at 43 Market Square in Duns.
