Bio Notes: Robert Fitzgerald (generally known as Bob) was born in Edinburgh in 1948 and educated at Perth Academy and at Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen. After graduating in 1972 he obtained a further diploma in Urban Design, which led to work with Cumbernauld Development Corporation and in Edinburgh City Council’s Planning Department, where he spend most of the 1970s. Towards the end of the decade he spent brief spells with Robert Hurd & Partners, Gordon Dey and the London practice of John Dangerfield, before moving to Aberdeen in 1979 to join Lister Drew & Partners.

He went into independent practice in Aberdeen in 1984 as Fitzgerald & Associates. The firm was best known for bars and nightclubs, winning a number of awards for work in this field, but also carried out hotel, housing, industrial and office projects. His wife, Kate, worked alongside him, managing the practice.

Fitzgerald was a passionate supporter of Perth’s St Johnstone Football Club, and was also a keen golfer. Easygoing and affable, he abhorred pomposity and red tape.

The Fitzgeralds suffered a painful blow when their son, who was studying graphic design, was killed in an Aberdeen tenement fire in 2008. Bob Fitzgerald died on 10 November the following year, after a short battle with cancer. His wife Kate and daughters Emily and Chloe survived him.
