Bio Notes: Arthur Binning was born in Wiltshire on 17 February 1937. Educated at the local primary school and at Wells Cathedral School, where he was a chorister, he commenced his architectural education with a course at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) School of Architecture, Bristol. In the early 1960s he moved to Scotland to undertake a post-graduate study of farm buildings, on completion of which he returned to Bristol. There, he worked for Watkins Gray; the focus was on hospitals, but he was also involved in extensive work on Exeter Town Centre and on schools and prisons.

In 1976 he was appointed Deputy Director of Architectural Services for Argyll and Bute District Council. He designed the Council’s new headquarters at Kilmory Castle, praised as ‘the second energy-saving building in the whole of Europe’. The energy-saving theme continued with his award-winning renovation of Campbeltown Swimming Pool. He was forced into early retirement by local government reorganisation in 1990.

Binning’s personal interests included car rallying and exploring the caves of the Mendips, where he twice assisted successful rescues. He was an active member of Bristol Road Cycling Club. He died on 12 July 2010, survived by his wife, Rona.
