Bio Notes: His national reputation was recognised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh which admitted him Fellow, and by the Institution of Civil Engineers of which he was for a time President.

Abernethy married ____ Neill from Wakefield and Leeds. He died at Whiteness, Broadstairs, on 8 March 1896, his practice being continued by his son James, born 17 May 1844, died 30 May 1897 at Margate. The firm subsequently became James Abernethy & Company, Engineers. A second son, John Scott Abernethy compiled his biography.
