Born: 23 July 1924

Bio Notes: John McCall Dick (usually known as Jack) was born in Motherwell on 23 July 1924 and was educated at Dalziel High School. His architectural studies were interrupted when he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and trained as a bomber pilot in Canada. By the end of the war he was engaged in flying Japanese Prisoners of War to the UK in a converted Liberator bomber.

When he returned to Scotland he was too late for entry that year to Glasgow School of Art so he began the part-time course which he continued until qualification in 1952. During this period he worked for East Kilbride Development Corporation. He was elected ARIBA in 1956.

His first post was with Lanarkshire County Council, then Cullen Lochhead & Brown and later with Keppie Henderson & Partners where he reached the position of Associate. He worked on a range of projects including numerous major school, hospital and office buildings. He was still with the practice in 1987 but no longer in 1994.

Outwith his work, Dick had a wide range of interests including music, literature and sport. He played rugby as a youngster and moved on to tennis, golf and bowls. In retirement he was involved with the erection of a war memorial on the Clelland Estate.

Dick died on 8 August 2012, survived by his wife, Joy, of 60 years.
