Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Kidd Barr | Designation: | | Born: | 28 June 1928 | Died: | 2016(?) | Bio Notes: | George Kidd Barr was the son of the minister of St Andrews Church, Kingussie. He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1951 and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He was elected ARIBA in 1955. At that time he was working in private practice in Kirkcaldy in the office of Robert Bradshaw Watt and was mainly involved in school projects. He later moved to Shetland where the death of the County Architect propelled him into that role and he built up a very good department. He stayed on in Shetland until around 1964 when he moved south to study for the ministry, probably in Glasgow. After qualification he was minister in Uddingston where he remained for the rest of his career. He was able to use his architectural skills for church surveys. Jim Sutherland describes him as 'an exceptionally modest man' continuing 'I can't help wondering what he might have done as an architect had he continued in that profession'.
He retired to Comrie. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | St Andrews Manse, Kingussie, Inverness-shire, Scotland | Private | c. 1953 | | | | c/o Mrs Watt/118, Masserene Road, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland | Private | c. 1956 | | | | 24, Voeside, Shetland, Scotland | Private | c. 1960 | | | | 28, Ancaster Drive, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | c. 1966 | | | | Manse of Viewpark/14, Holmbrae Road, Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private/business(?) | 1970 | After 1987 | | | 7, Tay Avenue, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland | Private | 1994 * | | In retirement. |
